Top 10 reason for Failing your driving test in Leeds

Below are 10 reasons why you will fail your driving test

Not making effective observations at junctions

You should be able make effective observations before moving into a new road. Also  make sure it is safe before you proceed

Thing like Failing to be at the correct speed when approaching a junction this could cause problems like going on to the other side of the road you are turning into.

Entering a roundabout when there is an vehicle approaching you from the right.  This would then force it to slow down

Making no effective observations at all. This would be you moving out and turning left or right and a vehicle has to perform an emergency stop or your examiner using the dual controls.

Making no observation when joining a dual carriageway. this is when you join from the slip road and force your way on to the carriageway

Going straight on at a crossroad. This is where you take no observation and you carry on driving as if there was no junction in front of you.

Repeatedly not looking left when turning left. you may think this is safe but you could miss anything from pedestrians to  cyclist or even something parked on the left as you turn.

Not using mirrors correctly when changing direction

You must take use of using your mirrors all the time including when changing speed of direction.

Some of these are like not checking your mirror on a roundabout and not seeing the vehicle at the side of you this also could be exiting a roundabout without checking your mirror.

Not moving off safely

Some examples of this are pulling off from behind a parked vehicle and forcing on coming traffic to slow down. It could also be something like moving off without checking your blind spot every time you move off. There is also when you do the parking on the right and reversing. After this you need to take extra care as you are on the wrong side of the road. When you do the emergency stop you must make observation to make sure it is safe to move off including rear observations.

Incorrect positioning when turning right at junctions

You must be in the correct position when turning right some common faults are positioning your self to the left when turning right for roundabout. there is also when you are turning right at a junction and you position yourself to the left and vehicles are unable to turn left. this could also be when you are turning right into a new road and position yourself so no one can get passed to carry on.

Not responding appropriately to traffic lights

Some of these errors are things like trying to drive through a red light. another common fault is stopping after the stop line at traffic lights. (realistically you have physically gone through a red light) Not progressing when your filter light comes on to say you can go in that direction. Not progressing when a green light is on and it is clear to go. Also if you go through a green light and it isa not clear to go this is another fault.

Not having proper control of the steering

Some of these are steering to much when turning left or steering too late for the junction. Not steering enough when going round a bend constantly hitting the kerb or driving over the centre line. Also steering to late when passing a vehicle.

Not responding correctly to road markings

In my mind the road markings and signs are the most important thing when driving as they tell you what you can and cannot do but also tell you where you go as well. some faults for this are not following the directional arrows for that lane if it says left only for that lane go left you can not fail for going the wrong way correctly. Straddling over lanes on a roundabout which does confuse people. driving over a solid white line on your right. This is because it is not safe to do this at that point. Then there is ignoring box junctions. They are there for a reason to stop you blocking junctions.

Not responding correctly to traffic signs

Some examples of this are things like driving over the speed limit for that road another is when you have a stop sign and line not stopping just keep moving. going the wrong side of a keep left sign this is another. We can also fail for driving in a bus lane when it is in the times that it is bus only. but remember to drive in it if it is outside the times.

Poor positioning on the road during normal driving

This has some of the other points we made earlier like driving to close to the kerb or centre line. there is also straight lining at a roundabout this is when you go in a straight line cutting through both lanes to the other side of the roundabout.

Not driving at a safe and reasonable speed

The last one we will look at is speed so when you are going at say 40 and there is a road sign ahead saying 30 you must be doing 30 when you get to the sign not after and if it was going from 30 to 40 you can not start increasing your speed until you get to the sign say 40. Another is driving to the conditions. although you may have a sign say 30 mph is it safe to do that speed if not you will not get penalised for this remember your driving  examiner wants just a safe comfortable drive and would be happy for you to pass.
